Your body is made from the nutrients you consume. The nutritional content of what you eat will largely determine the composition of your cell membranes, hormones, blood, and bone marrow. Additionally, what you eat can affect your emotional health as well as your physical being.

Long-term exposure to poor nutrition can put you at risk for developing depression, according to a study in the journal PLOS One; this study compared depression and diet in 3,663 individuals. In the study, what was defined as an unhealthy diet was one where processed foods and high sugar foods made up a large percentage of the total calories consumed.

Mark Hyman, MD, reveals that sugar causes inflammation. If you eat excessive amounts of sugar, insulin-resistant fat cells become larger, creating an inflammatory message that spreads the damage that is occurring in your body to your brain, leading to a depressed brain and a depressed psyche.
